Beautiful Madrid

A place with a lot of natural beauty, rich in history, and with a beautiful environment, Madrid is located in the heart of Spain. And in my heart also... Why? Because Madrid is not just a cultural destination, it is also a lively city with many pubs, cafes, and nightclubs opened till late into the night where I had the opportunity to spend some memorable moments. The reason for which I want to visit again Madrid is related to some interesting places I didn't had the necessary time to see in my previous trip.

Discovering Cyprus

As a general overview, Cyprus is an island located in the Mediterranean Sea. It is inhabited with mountains on the north and south and the south coast is covered with plains. The temperatures are really hot indicating Mediterranean climate. Winters are cooler. Nicosia is the capital city of Cyprus.

Greek, English and Turkish are the languages spoken here. There is a mixed culture of Greek and Middle East. The locals are very friendly and welcome outsiders with an open heart and make them feel at home. To greet someone a handshake will do. The country is full of vineyards, 12th century buildings, orchards and monasteries. Be careful when photographing outside. Taxis can be hired to move around the big towns in Cyprus, which charge according to the government regulated meters.

Port of Famagusta at Ammochostos and Port of Kyrenia, and airport of Ercan, have been declared as illegal 'ports of entry', so check it out while planning to get there. The national airline is Cyprus Airways. It connects most of the major cities of Europe. Other forty airlines, too, serve at the airport of Larnaca, which are 5 km away from Larnaka and 50km away from Nicosia. The other airport, Pafos, is 15km away from the city and it takes about 35 minutes to reach the city from the airport. It provides the same facilities like the Larnaca airport. The major ports of Cyprus are the Limassol port and Larnaca port which connect other ports of Middle East and Greek. Not only ferry services are provided here, even cruise services are provided here.

Cyprus Island is not connected by roads to other countries, but roads run across Cyprus connecting all the cities and villages. Buses run on roads except on Sunday but they run late in the mid-night during summers. Tourists can get on to rural buses to surf through the remote villages, but they are very slow. If planning to hire car, advanced booking is recommended, especially in summer as the booking is full most of the times.

Overlooking Athens from Lykavittos Hill

Lykavittos Hill is the highest peak in Athens, standing around 900 feet above sea level and being (because of its height) a landmark visible from almost every part of the city. Its name reflects a popular belief that the hill was inhabited by wolves. Another legend explains that Lykavittos hill appeared when Athena accidentally dropped a large rock she was going to use for the construction of the Acropolis. Despite these interesting legends, Lykavittos did not attract the attention of classical authors and historians.

However, the majestic peak is an important tourist destination. A small whitewashed chapel of St. George, erected in the 19th century on the site of a Byzantine church of Prophet Elijah, crowns the top of Lykavittos. From the top you can see a panorama of the entire city and the theatre, used for concerts and spectacles. To reach the top by foot, you need to prepare yourself for a long climb. The initial portion of the climb, among shrubs and small trees, is relatively easy. However, when you get to the stairs, laid out at a low angle to make the ascent easier, your legs are going to let you know they are not too happy about the exercise. If you don't feel like arguing with them, choose an easier way: take the funicular from Kolonaki. After you reach the top, you may rest and have a drink in a terraced restaurant or let the wind on the observation deck cool you down.

Discovering the Hidden Resources of Antarctica

Antarctica is an unexplored world all its own, which is why there are conducted international science researches. The most striking characteristic of Antarctica proves to be the enormous ice shelf that covers over not simply nearly all of the land, but furthermore pushes out into the water as a permanent floating ice shelf which exists sometimes on hundreds of miles across the sea. Holding almost 90 percent of all the ice on earth, this continent contains about two percent of all the water on our globe. The endurance of the great inland ice maintains sea level worldwide. With horrific consequences for all seacoasts and seaports, only a few feet of this ice melting and turning into water would cause the sea level to rise dangerously.

The layers of ice and snow contain information from the past on nuclear explosions, or the utilization of lead in gasoline. Common lead has been measured on the ice surface and tracked since the 1950's. Because of the precipitation of the decomposing lead alkyls that came from the leaded gasoline burning, the ice surfaces have demonstrated a scary rise in lead concentrations over the course of the past ten years.

Vegetation in Antarctica is found mostly as lichens. Springtails and mites prove to be the most common land animals. Visiting the Museums of Athens

Athens is loaded with museums. It seems like there are new museums and branches of old museums opening every week. Due to this, I will list below some of the museums that, in my opinion, shouldn’t be missed if you stay in the city for a couple of days.

The Acropolis Museum. The Acropolis Museum is an archaeological museum focused on the findings of the archaeological site of the Acropolis of Athens. The museum was built to house every artifact found on the rock and on its feet, from the Greek Bronze Age to Roman and Byzantine Greece. It also lies on the archaeological site of Makrygianni and the ruins of a part of Roman and early Byzantine Athens.

The Benaki Museum. The museum houses Greek works of art from the prehistorical to the modern times, an extensive collection of Asian art, hosts periodic exhibitions and maintains a state-of-the-art restoration and conservation workshop. Although the museum initially housed a collection that included Islamic art, Chinese porcelain and exhibits on toys, its 2000 re-opening led to the creation of satellite museums that focused on specific collections, allowing the main museum to focus on Greek culture over the span of the country's history.

National Archaeological Museum. The National Archaeological Museum houses some of the most important artifacts from a variety of archaeological locations around Greece from prehistory to late antiquity. It is considered one of the great museums in the world and contains the richest collection of artifacts from Greek antiquity worldwide.

Kerameikos Museum. In the ancient cemetery of Athens at the bottom of Ermou past the Monastiraki market it is a nice, but little museum. The Museum houses valuable collection of steles, sculpture, beautiful vases and terracotta figurines unearthed from the site.

Museum of Popular Musical Instruments. This museum located in Athens’ Plaka district is dedicated to Greek Popular Music. You feel happy the minute you walk in and probably you will dance and sing your way through.

National Gallery. The National Art Gallery and Alexander Soutzos Museum is an art museum devoted to Greek and European art from the 14th century to the 20th century.

Discovering the Lighthouses in the Canary Islands

Used to help mariners in the navigation of their vessels, the lighthouses are an integral part of the sea-life. Located on-shore, they are normally in the form of a cylindrical tower with a light on top. Prior to the invention of the lighthouse, mariners were warned of hazards and guided by fires which had been lit along the shores. There are a lot of lighthouses in the Canary Islands, some of them very beautiful, and due to this I will list below the most representatives based on the location and design.

Fuencaliente in La Palma. Built in 1903 this lighthouse has a cylindrical stone tower which is joined to a keeper's house. After being damaged in an earthquake in 1939, the lighthouse was rebuilt and then restored again in 2004 when a lantern was added. The lighthouse is not active, but adjacent was built another concrete cylindrical tower. Located at the southern most point of La Palma this operational lighthouse gives three white flashes every 20 seconds.

San Cristobal in La Gomera. Built in 1903, the original lighthouse is now inactive. However, it is situated at the front of the more recent San Cristobal lighthouse. The old lighthouse is white with a green metallic roof. The new lighthouse was built in 1978 and is operational providing 2 white flashes every 10 seconds. San Cristobal lighthouse can be found on the shore a little north of the resort of San Sebastian de La Gomera.

Punta del Hidalgo in Tenerife. Built in 1991, this lighthouse has the usual architectural design of a white tower in a split pyramid form. Currently active, this lighthouse is located in Punta del Hidalgo which can be found on the northeast coast, just north of Bajamar, and gives 3 white flashes every 16 seconds.

Punta Sardina in Gran Canaria. Built in 1985, Punta Sardina is a traditional style operational lighthouse - cylindrical, painted white with several red horizontal stripes beneath the gallery. Located on the northwest coast of the island of Gran Canaria, to the west of the resort of Galdar, the lighthouse gives 4 white flashes every 20 seconds.

Punta la Entellada in Fuerteventura. Built in 1955, we have chosen this lighthouse due to its unusual appearance, being built of stone with white cement between these stones and resemble a small fortress. Located near to Las Playitas the lighthouse provides 3 white flashes every 18 seconds.

Pechiguera in Lanzarote. Built in 1866, Pechiguera lighthouse ceased operation after 122 years. A new lighthouse was built adjacent to the old one in 1988. Painted white, the cylindrical tower emits every 30 seconds 3 white flashes. You will find both lighthouses at the southwest of the island of Lanzarote.

Napa valley, 30 miles long with a lot of grapes planted on more than 46,000 acres, is located in San Francisco. Known for its sparkling wines, Napa Valley is one of the premier travel destinations in the world. It has incredible locations where you can also find some of the most amazing wineries.

Discovering the Sacre-Coeur Basilica from Paris

It is very difficult to find a more charming and more typical place in Paris. In the enchanting quarter of Montmartre, you will feel the nostalgic heartbeat of the town where time seems standing still while walking across the narrow streets and climbing the famous romantic stairs, well known and familiar from a lot of movies. Then, you will discover the Sacre-Coeur Basilica with a breathtaking view all over Paris, and after that maybe you will take some minutes to enjoy a drink in one of the numerous cafes around the artist square named "Place du Tertre".

The Sacre-Coeur Basilica is a popular landmark in Paris, being dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. The basilica is located on the highest point in the city. With its origins in the aftermath of the French Revolution among ultra-Catholics and legitimist royalists, it developed more widely in France after the Franco-Prussian War. Though today it is asserted to be dedicated in honor of the 58,000 who lost their lives during the war, the decree of the Assemblée Nationale, back in 1873, specifies that it is to "expiate the crimes of the communards". Montmartre had been the site of the Commune's first insurrection, and many hard-core communards were forever entombed in the subterranean galleries of former gypsum mines where they had retreated, by explosives detonated at the entrances by the Army of Versailles. Hostages had been executed on both sides, and the Communards had executed the Archbishop of Paris, who became a martyr for the resurgent Catholic Church. His successor, climbing Montmartre in 1872, was reported having a vision, as clouds dispersed over the panorama: "It is here, it is here where the martyrs are, it is here that the Sacred Heart must reign so that it can beckon all to come".

Sacre-Coeur is built of travertine stone. This stone constantly exudes calcite, which ensures that the basilica remains white even with weathering and pollution. A mosaic in the apse, entitled Christ in Majesty, is among the largest in the world. The basilica complex includes a garden for meditation, with a fountain. The top of the dome is open to tourists and affords a spectacular panoramic view of the city of Paris.

Continuously ranked as one of the most popular and desirable tourist destinations, Sydney is known for its ocean beaches, famous landmarks and beautiful harbors. Tunisia is ranked by each tourist in accordance with their priorities: some will come for the sea, others for Sahara, and others to discover the secrets of ancient Carthage. But, anyway, more and more people choose to vacation in this country. The main resort area of Tunisia is located along the Mediterranean coast of Hammamet to the island of Djerba. These tourists are attracted by the beaches covered with soft sand, opposite from the capital Tunis side coast until Tabarka, which is practically on the border with Algeria, which is not so popular, due to the beaches driven by rocks.

The options for excursions are not so many, having the opportunity to choose from a set of tours which will be available no matter where you stay: the ruins of Carthage, the largest Roman Coliseum in North Africa at El Jem, Kairouan holy city of Islam, with the oldest mosque and mausoleum on the continent. Besides this, directly in the sand, there are some other entertainment options waiting for you: air balloon, camel racing, horse riding, jeep safari. You can even leave the high dune on a snowboard.

Hammamet is one of the most popular resorts among foreign tourists. Last but not least is the fact that here is the fourth largest thalasso therapy center in the world. If you take the road from El Kantavi to Sousa, at only only 5 km, you will find the town of Sousse. This is not only a major resort, but also the third largest city of Tunisia, older than Carthage. As for shopping, even if in Tunisia you will find mostly small shops with souvenirs and beach items, in Sousse there are a lot of shops, including fashion boutiques.

A boating holiday in France is a truly great idea because France offers an enormous choice of regions for visiting, each of them being perfect for a relaxing holiday. Exploring Rome

You can spend an entire week in Rome realizing that you only have skimmed the surface. And this only because there are so many top attractions in Rome and almost every corner you turn you'll find something to visit: starting from the Colosseum, the Pantheon or the Roman Forum. And this is not all: the Trevi Fountain and the Spanish Steps at Piazza di Spagna represent also a must see when you are in Rome. And of course no visit to Rome would be complete without a trip to the top attractions of the Vatican City like St. Peter's Basilica, St. Peter's Square, the Sistine Chapel and the Vatican Museums.

A dinner cruise on the River Tiber is highly recommended and also the tour of the city by night in order to see it all light up. You can also go to the St. Peter's Square to experience an audience with the Pope which takes place usually on Wednesday's. If you're here during the hot summer months you can take a short train ride out to Ostia beach which is just about 24km from the city centre. In conclusion, Rome is full of interesting places for you to see.

But it is not all of attractions when you are visiting this beautiful city. You have also to find some great hotels in Rome, in order to fully enjoy the trip.
