Famous People Wearing Glasses

Glasses are perhaps the easiest and most effective way for improving vision. They also happen to be one thing that most children avoid wearing: not because they don't need them, but because they are afraid of the teasing and the bullying they'll be in for. All children dread the idea of needing to wear glasses. Childhood is enough of a difficult period without the children having one more reason to add to it.

One way of helping children get comfortable with wearing glasses is to point out to them all the famous people who wear them too, making them aware that it's not such a bad thing, and might even be cool. There are a large number of celebrities wearing glasses these days: and the top of the list is Elton John who reportedly owns several thousand pairs of glasses. Also several politicians wear glasses, like Franklin Roosevelt and Theodore Roosevelt. Harry Truman wore glasses, as did Mahatma Gandhi whose glasses have become synonymous with him. Tony Blair wears glasses, as does the Queen of England.

Amongst other famous men wearing glasses there are writers like James Joyce who wore glasses regularly. Then there is Bill Gates who has made wearing glasses cool. Another celebrity wearing glasses, and one who is extremely hot, is Johnny Depp. Other actors that can be reminded here are Hugh Grant, Morgan Freeman, Sylvester Stallone, Kurt Russell, Brad Pitt and Tom Cruise.

Other famous people wearing glasses are singers and musicians, like P-Diddy, Ray Charles, Roy Orbinson and Stevie Wonder. John Lennon shocked the world when he started to wear glasses, and also Elvis Presley wore glasses. And this list of celebrities wearing glasses can go on and on and can be an excellent way of encouraging children to wear glasses.

The Origins of Greek Cuisine

Greece has an ancient culinary tradition dating back several millennia, and over the centuries Greek cuisine has evolved and absorbed numerous influences and influenced many cuisines itself.

Some dishes can be traced back to ancient Greece: lentil soup, retsina (white or rosé wine flavored with pine resin) and pasteli (candy bar with sesame seeds baked with honey); some to the Hellenistic and Roman periods: loukaniko (dried pork sausage); and Byzantium: feta cheese, avgotaraho (cured fish roe) and paximadi (traditional hard bread baked from corn, barley and rye). There are also many ancient and Byzantine dishes which are no longer consumed: porridge as the main staple, fish sauce, and salt water mixed into wine.

Many dishes are part of the larger tradition of Ottoman cuisine and their names reveal Arabic, Persian or Turkish roots: moussaka, tzatziki, yuvarlakia, keftethes, boureki, and so on. Many dishes' names probably entered the Greek vocabulary during Ottoman times, or earlier in contact with the Persians and the Arabs. Some dishes may be pre-Ottoman, only taking Turkish names later; Ash and Dalby, for example, speculate that grape-leaf dolmathes were made by the early Byzantine period.

A few dishes are influenced by Venetian (Italian) and French cuisines, such as pastitsio, makaronia me kima, (pasta with meat) found mostly in Greece and Anatolia and Asia Minor and regions of that influence. Legend has it that Klephtico, which is slowly cooked lamb (or other meat), can be translated as 'stolen meat'. The Klephts, not having flocks of their own, would steal lambs or goats and cook the meat in a sealed pit to avoid the smoke being seen.

A History of Cuban Music

Since music and dance have always been a way of life in Cuba, all styles and their evolution would fill an entire book. For example, in the urban centers, contradanza, based on the French, salon style contredanse, evolved into the still popular danzon. Urban street music, influenced by African religious rituals, Christian religious carnivals and Caribbean carnival music similar to Brazil’s samba mixed together and gave birth to rumba and conga.

The music of the countryside, known collectively as musica campensina, gave rise to guajira, the lyrical, sweet musical form that extols the virtues of the land and Cuba’s beauty. The trova, another rural style of music from the eastern part of the island, dispersed news and gossip, often through satire. The Cuban bolero, evolving from the trova, is the epitome of the romantic love song. And finally, reflecting influences of all of these earlier musical styles is the heart of Cuban music, the son. As waves of immigrants migrated north to the U.S., Cuban music fused with other musical formats in the urban centers. In the mid-twentieth century, new, popular musical styles were born from this fusion giving us the mambo, cha cha and salsa. In order to have just a little taste of these marvelous music styles, you can search for artists like Celia Cruz, Arsenio Rodriguez, Ibrahim Ferrer, Omara Portuondo or Compay Segundo. Also, you can search on the movie torrents sites for the Afro Cuban Legends documentary.

Today, it’s difficult to say who invented some of the popular Cuban musical forms: for example, does salsa come from Cuba or from New York? But not this answer is important here. What really matters is the fact that Latin music continues to evolve and to reflect a global heartbeat.

Discover Montmartre

The Montmartre Hill is very famous for the Sacre-Coeur Basilica and its fantastic panoramic view over Paris, but is also a gastronomical and cultural area with an authentic charm. Very rural until a century ago, Montmartre is nowadays the last village in the big city of Paris.

Montmartre, primarily known for the white Basilica of Sacre Coeur as I mentioned before, is also famous as a nightclub district. The other church on this hill is Saint Pierre de Montmartre, which claims to be the location at which the Jesuit order of priests was founded. The lovely old Moulin de La Galette, the last Montmartre windmill, inspired famous artists. Today, the many painters on Place du Tertre are always ready to sketch out your face, which can be a nice souvenir from Paris. They remind us of the many great artists like: Renoir, Monet, Van Gogh or Picasso who lived there in late 19th / early 20th centuries.

Walking at random across Montmartre, you will discover gardens, old houses, steep streets and staircases with splendid Paris views. In conclusion, forget the well-trodden path and open the door to another Montmartre, the last village of Paris, with its beautiful streets full of history, charm and happiness.

Something Great to Listen to: Gracias from Omara Portuondo

Omara Portuondo is a Cuban singer and dancer whose career has spanned over half a century. She was one of the original members of the Cuarteto d'Aida, and returned to perform with The Buena Vista Social Club ensemble.

With Gracias album (released in December 2008), Omara Portuondo wanted to revisit the songs that she has found most moving and to work with the songwriters she most admires, such as Silvio Rodríguez, Pablo Milanés and Jorge Drexler. But these are not the only star guests on this recording, as if the list was not already impressive enough (other great names being Chucho Valdés, the African musician Richard Bona and the Brazilian maestro Chico Buarque). Some striking collaborations present on this project, must be mentioned, starting with O que será in duet with Chico Buarque and finishing with Ámame como soy with Pablo Milanés, a song with lyrics that could stand as a metaphor for the whole album.

If you didn’t had so far the chance to listen to her music, you can have a little taste by grabbing one of the tracks mentioned above using an MP3 Search Engine, although I recommend buying the CD since it’s a fine album to have in your collection. Let me know if you enjoyed it…

Internet making our brains different, not dumb

Future of the Internet 'in the year 2020 could bring a new kind of literacy, the experts say

A decade from now, Google is not going to make us "stupid," the Internet can make us more literate in different ways and efforts to protect the anonymity of individuals will be even more difficult to achieve, according to many experts surveyed to see the "Future Internet" on 2020.
Pew Internet & American Life Project and Elon University Imagining the Internet Center asked nearly 895 technology "stakeholders and the critics" about their expectations for the Internet 10 years from now. Among those asked: the representatives of the Institute for the Future, the Association of Internet Researchers, professors, lawyers and Internet privacy, Internet pioneer and those in the business world.

One of the questions they ask is whether Google, in some ways is a metaphor for the ease of information on the Internet, "will make a fool" because of society's over-reliance on search engines and the Web for everything from easily copied to the address of school report to "Googling" prospective applicants or employees.

The idea was aimed at the year 2008 story for The Atlantic titled "Is Google Making Us Stupid?" by author Nicholas Carr.

Kitchen Decorating

About the fact that I am planning to redecorate my home this year, I’ve spoke in my previous posts. Now, all the attention goes to my kitchen. Overall, my kitchen will not have to look beautiful just from a functional and architectural standpoint, but also to be a warm and inviting place.

Today's kitchens are truly busy places, going beyond traditional cooking and dining activities. In many homes, they have also become second living rooms, used for family gatherings, doing homework, and entertaining. I think one reason for their popularity is due to the open spaces where kitchens and living rooms flow from one to the other, separated only by a small bar or counter. The other reason might be that kitchens have a way of tantalizing all of our senses like no other room can.

But before creating the right ambiance that will make my kitchen truly irresistible, it will have to be functional: starting from the furniture and ending with the accessories. And the most important thing: to find the perfect stainless steel sink for my wife. To this end, after a little browsing on the Internet, I found on MR Direct web site a various gallery of such products having very low prices. So, the issue related to stainless steel sinks seems to be solved: I will let her choose something suitable from this web site. In the meantime, I’m thinking to remove the doors from some of my cabinets, just for giving them a makeover.

Further details related to the decorations I intend to use, in a future post…

The History of Beds in Medieval Europe

A bed is a large piece of furniture used as a place to sleep. But early beds, were not as they are today. The ancient Germans lay on the floor on beds of leaves covered with skins, or in a kind of shallow chest filled with leaves and moss. In the early Middle Ages they laid carpets on the floor or on a bench against the wall, placed upon them mattresses stuffed with feathers, wool or hair, and used skins as a covering. They appear to have generally lain naked in bed, wrapping themselves in the large linen sheets which were stretched over the cushions. Imagine how their bed bugs symptoms were…

In the 13th century luxury increased, and bedsteads were made of wood much decorated with inlaid, carved and painted ornament. They also used folding beds, which served as couches by day and had cushions covered with silk laid upon leather. At night a linen sheet was spread and pillows placed, while silk-covered skins served as coverlets. Curtains were hung from the ceiling or from an iron arm projecting from the wall. The Carolingian manuscripts show metal bedsteads much higher at the head than at the feet, and this shape continued in use until the 13th century in France, many cushions being added to raise the body to a sloping position. In the 12th-century manuscripts the bedsteads appear much richer, with inlays, carving and painting, and with embroidered coverlets and mattresses in harmony. Curtains were hung above the bed, and a small hanging lamp is often shown.

In the 14th century the woodwork became of less importance, being generally entirely covered by hangings of rich materials. Silk, velvet and even cloth of gold were much used. Inventories from the beginning of the 14th century give details of these hangings lined with fur and richly embroidered. Then it was that the tester bed made its first appearance, the tester being slung from the ceiling or fastened to the walls, a form which developed later into a room within a room, shut in by double curtains, sometimes even so as to exclude all drafts. The space between bed and wall was called the ruelle, and very intimate friends were received there.

In the 15th century beds became very large, reaching to 7 or 8 feet by 6 or 7 feet. The mattresses were often filled with pea-shucks, straw or feathers. At this time great personages were in the habit of carrying most of their property about with them, including beds and bed-hangings, and for this reason the bedsteads were for the most part mere frameworks to be covered up; but about the beginning of the 16th century bedsteads were made lighter and more decorative, since the lords remained in the same place for longer periods.

Denver’s Architectural Treasures

The City of Denver is located in the South Platte River Valley on the High Plains just east of the Front Range of the Rocky Mountains. The Denver downtown district is located immediately east of the confluence of Cherry Creek with the South Platte River, approximately 15 miles east of the foothills of the Rocky Mountains. Denver is nicknamed the "Mile-High City" because its official elevation is exactly one mile, above sea level.

Much of the city’s character is derived from the homes, buildings and public structures that line its streets. From ornate Victorian masterpieces to modern wonders of design, Denver Colorado is filled with architectural accomplishments. So while the mountains provide a spectacular backdrop, the architecture is even more spectacular. Start at Capitol Hill and make your way down the 16th Street Mall, and you will encounter some of the city’s greatest buildings and landmarks: Colorado State Capitol, Denver Art Museum, Trinity Methodist Church, Daniels & Fisher Tower, Union Station or Denver Millennium Bridge.

Going to the Theatre

Since I don’t want to miss any chance to escape from everyday life, I’m planning to go to the theatre at the end of this week. Going to the theatre is a very unique experience: I like to sit back in a comfortable atmosphere and enjoy stepping into a different world. Seeing the performances of the actors in the play, is completely different than watching them on cineman. Mainly beacause there is a magnetism which is very easy to notice. And what to say about the live music? The way it rises and swirls around the audience, progressively getting louder and faster as the show moves on, it always gets everybody in the mood.

Because I am looking for that special mood described above, I intend to go to the Beacon Theatre. Located in New York, Beacon Theatre is a fantastic Art Deco treasure, recognized as a national landmark. Since everyone knows that Beacon Theatre Tickets are some of the hardest tickets to get from many box offices, in order to access them I appealed to a professional online broker called A Cheap Seat. And the result was avoiding disappointment for my family members.

On this site you can access various tickets for Football, Baseball or Hockey games, like New York Rangers Tickets, and also for festivals or concerts, like Prudential Center Tickets. Using this service, I guaranteed myself the availability of desired tickets and the lowest possible prices from the market.

Diet And Exercise Evolution: Best Weight Loss Exercises

image www.turbulencetraining.com

The only absolute truth in the area of exercise and weight loss is this: Becoming more physically active will burn calories, and as long as you don't absorb those calories back by eating more, you will lose weight. Getting active and getting your muscles to burn more calories is an essential part of a weight management program. It will improve your circulation and your nervous system more than any diet could. Regular exercise can fight all signs of aging, lower cholesterol ratings and reduce osteoporosis. But the question that fuels the multi-million dollar fitness industry is, "What exercise is best?"

This is a very contentious area. Mr. Weightless will only tell the simple truth, so below is the information that has been proven to be true, but the final judgment is yours.
Slow and Steady Wins the Race...

Slow and steady exercise that raises your heart rate a significant amount, but that still allows you to breathe without struggling for at least 20 minutes will encourage fat loss. This is called aerobic exercise. The term aerobic means "with air", meaning that your muscles are burning sugar and fat in the presence of oxygen. To be able to burn calories in the presence of oxygen, you have to be taking regular breaths, so the activity you're doing must be a moderate pace, at most. For many people who are overweight, this can mean simply a fast walk. For many athletes, this may be a quick run. It doesn't matter where you are along the spectrum as long as your heart rate is raised and you can breathe normally.

Why 20 minutes? At first, your body will only burn blood-sugar because it is readily available. If you keep going long enough, your body realizes that blood-sugar won't be enough, so it starts burning fat as well. If you stop exercising before this happens, then your body will simply be tired and you will feel hungry because your blood-sugar will be low (see my article on Satiety). Your body wants to retain the fat and avoid burning it. This is a survival mechanism... read my article on Adaptation.

Or Does Maximum Intensity?

There is another school of thought that has had similar success with just as much good theory behind it. Vigorous exercise for 10-15 minutes will burn just as many calories from your blood-sugar as a longer duration exercise, but it will also raise your metabolism for many hours afterwards. In other words, you won't burn fat during your workout, but you will slowly burn fat for a period of time after finishing. This method has been shown to have more dramatic effects on lowering body-fat than the low-intensity exercise described above. This is anaerobic exercise, meaning "without air". You'll be going fast enough that your breathing won't be enough to fuel the calorie burning. Carbohydrates (blood sugar) will burn without oxygen, which leads to the creation of lactic acid. This is what accumulates in your muscles, and makes them feel like they're burning.

However, there are serious drawbacks to this method, which make it difficult to recommend this strategy. Before embracing the high-intensity mindset, read below.

First, if a person is just starting a program, they risk serious injury if they try to exercise too vigorously. Knees, hips and ankle joints are very common injury sites, and muscle cramping can be very painful even if it is short-lived. Don't exercise at your peak intensity until you're used to exercising!

Secondly, high-energy activities tend to be high-impact on the body. Running fast, playing racketball, and jumping jacks wear down the connective tissues in the body, so even if a person is not directly injured, they are causing long-term damage. People who run road races often have chronic hip, knee and ankle pain. If you decide to pursue this type of high-energy program, I highly recommend a reclined stationary bike to reduce the strain on your joints.

The third problem is how vigorous does a person need to exercise? If you go at your absolute peak, you may only last three minutes, maybe less, and that won't be effective. It is difficult to gauge how much you can push yourself to be exhausted exactly at 12 minutes.

Finally, though vigorous exercise technically takes less time, it requires changing into workout clothes, doing the exercise, then taking a shower and changing back again. That means scheduling more time for the preparation than for low-intensity activities, as well as having access to a place to change. On the other hand, going for a brisk walk you can do on a whim, maybe more than once a day, in your regular clothes.

The Best of Both Worlds

You can get good results using either method, but the best method is to combine the two. Your goal should be to do a warm-up of aerobic activity for about 20 minutes, followed by 10 minutes of anaerobic exercise. For many people, a 20 minute brisk walk followed by a 10 minute run makes the most sense. For those who play high intensity sports like racketball, a light warm up on a stationary bike for 20 minutes before a match can kick-start the fat burning process. Everyone is different.

That may be too much for someone who is just starting out, though. The best recommendation is to start at a low intensity activity like walking, and gradually increasing the intensity week to week. A good way to do this is to walk down the street directly away from your home for 20 minutes, then turn around and walk back at a slightly quicker pace. This low-intensity 40 minute exercise every day should be fine for the first week. Don't aim to run right from the start, start slow, be patient, and improve consistently every day. After a week or two, turn the "walk away" portion into a quick power-walk and try to jog all the way back. Remember to use time, not distance, as your measuring-stick. Making your workouts shorter is not the goal, we always want our fat-burning exercise to last 30 minutes, and our warm-up aerobics to last 20 minutes, regardless of distance.

The Ultimate Weight Loss Exercise

Interval Traning is the best combination of long-duration aerobic exercise and short-duration anaerobic exercise, and can melt the fat off faster than anything else. Look for my article describing Interval Training on WeightlessProducts.com

Frequency

How regular should exercise be? Every day. Anyone can fit in one half hour into their schedule. You should look forward to the physical activity, so choose one that you like to do if walking isn't for you. Remember that you're training your body to lose weight. If you don't exercise every day, your body will think that when you do exercise, it's a minor exceptional change. Only by doing it every day will your body come to expect it, and will therefore prepare for it. Training your body to expect to burn calories is half the battle! If anything, take the stairs instead of the elevator.

Quick Ways to Make Money?

Having in mind that I’ve spoken in my previous post about how benefic would be a nice and relaxing vacation, and also the need to put food on my family table or to pay bills, I came to the conclusion that this year, more than anytime, I need serious money. And when we speak about fast money, it’s not surprisingly that many people think that the Internet could be the answer.

There are lots of reliable possibilities that can lead to a fuller pocket, but definitely won’t make you rich. Even if you start from selling that old guitar you never play or those CDs you don't listen to anymore, the options are limited if you're short on time. But it’s not impossible! In order to make some extra money as soon as possible, take into consideration also the following possibilities: turn the old cans into cash by bringing them in to be recycled, use an options trading system, open a lemonade stand or turn your car into a moving advertisement. These are just a few quick ways of getting money, but not all of them. If you can dance, play music or tell jokes, you can become a street performer. You can also sell things you don’t need anymore online at web sites like eBay, Amazon and Craig’s list. Or you can start making cash with your blog, if you have one.

Escaping in the Heart of Myrtle Beach

Since I had a terrible week at work and since I just wrote an article about golf, I would love to have a little vacation just for relaxing at a beautiful resort located on a magnificent beach and, even, playing a few rounds of golf (and here I must specify that I am a fan of the stroke play). To this end, I have in mind this beautiful Resort in Myrtle Beach, located on the Oceanfront of South California. With breathtaking coastline views along the shoreline and being located close to attractions, this Myrtle Beach Resort called Grand Shores seems to be the perfect place for an ideal vacation.

And because I intend to book a whole week here, let’s take a little look on some websites having reviews that could be trusted. Besides some small complains about the poor number of towels or about the lack of attractions for children, only good things about the Oceanfront Myrtle Beach Hotel: it seems to be a very clean hotel, with nice staff and good food.

There is one thing I want to point out, that customized golf vacations are also offered by the hotel with the possibility of choosing between the hotel rooms or the condominiums. I can’t wait to tee off at one of the golf courses in that area and to get in touch with the nature, swimming and fishing!

Other Forms of Golf

As you probably know, this sport knows several competition forms. Generally, it is played for the lowest number of strokes by an individual, known simply as stroke play, or the lowest score on the most individual holes during a complete round by an individual or team, known as match play. But these are just the basic forms. Below, I will present you other three forms of golf.

Skins. In a skins game, golfers compete on each hole, as a separate contest. Played for prize money on the professional level or as a means of a wager for amateurs, a skin, or the prize money assigned to each hole, carries over to subsequent holes if the hole is tied. If you come to the end of the round and there are still skins left over, play continues until the final skin has been decided.

Stableford. In stableford the player gains points for the score achieved on each hole of the round or tournament (1 point for a bogey, 2 points for a par, 3 points for a birdie, 4 points for an eagle). The points achieved for each hole of the round or tournament is added to produce the total points score, and the player with the highest score wins.

Foursome. A foursome is played between two teams of two players each, in which each team has only one ball and players alternate playing it. For example, if players A and B form a team, A tees off on the first hole, B will play the second shot, A the third, and so on until the hole is finished. On the second hole, B will tee off (regardless who played the last putt on the first hole), then A plays the second shot, and so on. Foursomes can be played as match play or stroke play.
